_______________

Most certainly this still need some weeding out though I cannot find any more fault to

correct at the moment.
Use reasonable doubt and track mistakes for a while till this warning disappear.

DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS : how to differentiate  one knot from another :

AZTEC knot   /   BARCUS knot / COLIMA LAZY MAN button  / FAN knot  /

FLORES knot / GAUCHO's knot   / GINFER knot /  HANSEN knot  /
HEADHUNTER's knot   /
HERRINGBONE knot  /  HERRINGBONE
PINEAPPLE /
HOOD knot  / NORTON knot  /   PAMPAS button /  SMALL
PAMPAS button /
Regular Turksheads  .....

I am not blessed with the complicated mind of a mathematician or of an engineer and I like label using FRAME OF REFERENCE SIMPLE AND INDEPENDENT so I will not accept the ROW coded , COLUMN coded as this is dependent on the frame of reference horizontal mandrel with bight rims on left and right side vertical cylinder with bight rims at top and bottom

I much prefer my own labels that work whatever the frame of reference is, horizontal
mandrel or vertical cylinder, as its frame of reference is the knot  ITSELF and not
its orientation
!

so it will be
- INTER-BIGHT coded ( ROW coding of MANDREL== COLUMN coding of cylinder)
- PARALLEL BIGHT Coded ( COLUMN coding of MANDREL ==ROW of cylinder)

You can get a first quick sorting  using the coding  (make sure you separate that coding from the cordage route followed : quite a lot of knots are made FOLLOWING THE CORDAGE ROUTE OF A TURKSHEAD YET WITHOUT THE CODING O1-U1 or U1-O1 of a standard regular THK said  - a bit of an idiosyncratic mannerism ! - Casa Knot it is for some person,  in fact CASA IS NOT THE THK BUT THE CODING !
That seems to escape most people fond of
that word : should not be a CASA  Knot but a CASA CODED Knot.
Look at Turk's Head_20 first topic to get Schaake's perspective on that.

INTER-BIGHT AND PARALLEL-BIGHT coding
* that will be the standard regular Turk's Head

INTER-BIGHT coding
* HERRINGBONE ( included the FLORES knot )
* PINEAPPLE ( NOT a Herringbone Pineapple
* BEVERLEY knot

* O2 Schaake & Turner Knot
* HOOD knot
* HORN knot
* GRANT knot

PARALLEL-BIGHT coding
* GAUCHO ( included  : Spanish Ring knot )
* FAN knot
* AZTEC-FAN knot
* HEADHUNTER's knot
* GINFER knot
* HANSEN
* NORTON

NEITHER INTER BIGHT NOR PARALLEL BIGHT coding
* checkered / chequered  pattern  ( there exist CHEQUERED PINEAPPLE KNOTS
and CHEQUERED HERRINGBONE  )

This is about the FORMAT or TYPE of the coding, now for the SPECIFIC CODING

particular cases are the BRUCE knot and the CATHARINE knot
Schaake extract N° 1   Schaake extract N° 2
both are 2-PASS STANDARD  HERRINGBONE-PINEAPPLE KNOTS

2-PASS means 2! = 2*1==2 ways to make the knots that are stictly equivalent as far as
finished state is concerned.
I have explained it quite enough , "in length, in width and sideways" as goes the French saying, in Turkshead_16.

Don't even begin to believe that doing one knot before doing the other knot would change the result.
It is exactly like ADDITION (addition of THK ) 2 + 3 or   3 + 2  it is all the same.
The only thing that will change from one way to the other is the table of coding for each PASS

GRANT is using a trick : he shows the THK assembly made using a single-strand and hiding the factin the finished  knot.

BEVERLEY knot also making use of THK cordage route
13L 9B   O2 - U2 - O1 - U1 - O2 - U2 - O1 - U1
the original knot is that one but you may extended it along the same principle of
adding  an O2 - U2 -O1 - U1 sequence so as to get
O2 - U2 - O1 - U1 - O2 - U2 - O1 - U1 - O2 - U2 -O1 - U1
you will need an ODD number of LEAD whether you use and ODD or an EVEN number of sequence O2 - U2 -O1 - U1  ( that is obvious, is not it ?  sequence cover an EVEN number of crossing, an EVEN number time and ODD OR AN EVEN will give an EVEN result ! hence an ODD number of LEAD in any case )
I will let you devise the general formula.

HEEL knot
see what has been written on that in another page. ( usually BUT NOT always a Pineapple Knot.
Any """globe knot""" (stupid appellation as itis spherical covering and not globe knot)
should function as a knot put on the heel of the bosal.

a THREE ROW HOOD knot can be
< < and < and <      OR        < < < and < and <         OR         < < < and < < and < <

( Hall ) 15L 12B 3 PASS ( the 3 THK in there are all identical, here 5L 4B )
Tie the first THK then with the second make a 2 PASS HERRINGBONE knot then

HEADHUNTER's knot  also making use of THK cordage route
7L 4B 2 PASS == O2 - U2 - O2
7L 5B  2 PASS == O2 - U2 -O2
7L 12B  2 PASS == O2 - U2 - O2
11L 8B   2 PASS ==O2 - U2 - O2 - U2 - O2
The sorriest dummies will have inferred :
--- ODD number of LEAD as the number of crossing in L-1 then you get an EVEN number of crossing which goes nicely with the 2 PASS    O2 - U2 - O2    6 crossings
2 PASS    O2 - U2 - O2 - U2 - O2    10 crossings
so it begging with O(PASS) and end with O(PASS) ( here O2 as 2 PASS )

GAUCHO knot  also making use of TH cordage route all from SCHAAKE &
TURNER

9L 8B 1 PASS ==  U1 - O1 - U1 - O1 - U1 - O1 - U1 - O1
9L 5B 2 PASS    O2 - U2 - O2 - U2
13L 8B 2 PASS   O2 - U2 - O2 - U2 - O2 - U2
13L 8B  3 PASS  O3 - U3 - O3 - U3

again ODD number of LEAD for EVEN number of crossings
GAUCHO general formula is
-  THK cordage route
- ODD number of LEAD
- coding : O(PASS) - U(PASS) in such a repetition that it covers for (L - 1) crossings

now some from somewhat  lesser Authors: Ron EDWARDS and  Hall.

SPANISH RING KNOT ( small GAUCHO ) also making use of TH cordage route
5L 7B 2 PASS ==  U2 - O2
5L 3B  2 PASS== U2 - O2
5L 8B 2 PASS == U2 - 02
7L 10B 3 PASS == U3 - O3
9L 10B 4 PASS == U4 - O4

so it is easy = ODD number of LEAD ( from an EVEN number of crossing -there are two SET of crossing the OVER and the UNDER so it follow that whether the SET is EVEN OR ODD as there are TWO of them it will lead to an EVEN total number of crossing that isso  self evident that I am ashamed to state it , yet experience taught me that there are always a good number that will not spontaneously get that !
so SPANISH RING KNOT general formula is
- TH cordage route
- ODD number of LEAD
- coding U(PASS) - O(PASS)

GAUCHO-FAN KNOT ( Hall )
10L 8B 2 PASS ( from a 5L 4B primary THK )
Gaucho BIGHT on the left, gaucho pattern in the centre, Fan type bight on the right side (mandrel frame of reference of course )

11L 13B        U2 - O3 - U3 - O2
11L 9B           O2 - U3 - O3 - U2
general formula
- THK cordage route
- ODD number of LEAD
- coding  the "border" is one less than its immediate neighbour set ( toward the center )
e.g
O - U2 - O2 - U2 - O2 - U
 U2 - O3
- U3 - O2   OR     O2 - U3 - O3 - U2

now one from Hall
11L 10B    U2- O3 - U3 - O2

AZTEC-FAN knot also making use of THK cordage route
15L 8B ( Schaake )   O3 - U1 - O1 - U2 - O2 - U2 - O2 - U1  (fan coding in green )
general formula
- THK cordage route
- ODD number of LEAD
- coding

8L 7B ( Grant ) AZTEC knot ( no mention of FAN )    O3 - U1 - O3

SAMUEL knot also making use of THK cordage route
8L 13B       O1 - U2 - O1 - U2 - O1
general formula
- THK cordage route
- EVEN number of LEAD for EVEN number of crossings ( look at the SET of crossing
to understand )
- coding  begins  with O1, then alternate enough U2-O1 to cover for
( L -2 ) ( minus 2  for - 1 plus the  O1 already "counted" )  : as  ( each U2 - O1 will
add an ODD number  if you add and EVEN number of (U2 - O1 ) then you need an EVEN number of LEAD but for an ODD number of ( U2 - O1 ) then you need an ODD number of LEAD ( EVEN number of crossing ; that should as evident as the nose in the middle of the face , no ? )

GINFER knot also making use of THK cordage route
(Edwards ) 9L 11B         U3 - O1 - U1 - O3
(Grant )  9L U3 - O1 - U1 - O3
the centre sequence O1 - U1 can be modified by an interweave

SIDE knot ( Grant )
O2 - U2 - O2

HANSEN ( Frank HANSEN of Oregon ) knot  found it in HALL but the actual study was from SCHAAKE ( The Braider issue N° 3 - August 1995 plus N°4 / N°5 /  and NOT N°2 - May 1995 - alas far from being the first approximate way of doing thing from that quarter ! - as erroneously indicated by HALL  )
3 THK all of identical sizing are needed
15L 6B  ( from 3 THK 5L 2B ) BUSH form
O1 - U3 - O3 - U3 - O3 - U3 - O3 - U1
( 3 regular THK assembled and made with a single strand ) "double a THK and then split
the pair"

BUSH-BRAID FORM according to SCHAAKE :
In bush braidwork it is the aim to produce a serviceable article by means of of quick and simple processes . The standard of braidwork plays little if any role...Hence a bush-braideris not a braiding artisan, nor does generally such a person have a desire to become one
 ( well at least they are more lucid than many an ornamental knot tyer of the Mutual
Admiration and Self-promotion Society believing they are "wonders" not only good but great ! )

So Schaake distinguish
HANSEN BUSH KNOTS to distinguish them from their PROPER AND CORRECT
COUNTERPARTS the HANSEN KNOTS.

( TYPE 1*  HANSEN BUSH KNOTS ( :  based on regular THK with ODD number of
LEAD, they are SUPPOSED to  ape GAUCHO knots.

A   (2*n + 1 ) PASS HANSEN Type 1 or 1*  is an assembly ( interweave ) of (2 * n + 1 )
identical regular THK with an ODD number of LEAD with PARALLEL BIGHT coding

15L 6B ( Hall )    tied from a 5L 2B THK
O1 - U3 - O3 - U3 - O3 - U1  formed by doubling a regular THK and then splitting the pairs.
Centre of knot has then  a 3 PASS GAUCHO pattern

NORTON knot ( according to Hall/Hickey )  from Dr  W.E. Norton from Louisiana :
regular nested bight -gaucho -  and gaucho pattern at the centre.
8L 8B 2 PASS from a 5L 4B THK + 3L 4B THK
TYPE 1 == right side bight rim or primary knot on BIGHT BOUNDARY 1 ( as for PAK )
TYPE 2 == right side bight rim or primary knot on BIGHT BOUNDARY 2
REPEATED group coding
U2  O2  U2  U1
U1  O2  U2

According to Hall a doubled THK ( he sticks with his blasted "casa" )  would be  a TYPE 2
CHECKERED NORTON :
why make simple when you can make it confused ? I ask you .
Why not just stay at doubled ( follow-the-leader) THK ?
