Marvelous authentic historical models from the Royal Collections and a very unusual "one of a kind " splice.
In French there is 'l'épissure carrée' / 'Square or short splice' and l'épissure longue / long splice but I have never seen anywhere this ' épissure en boudin'.
It is the object of a feature in the 'Investigations' pages.

Historical cordages.

Masts, sails, rigging in close-up.

A 18th century bone fid about 5 to 6 cm of diameter at the largest part and 45 to 47 cm in length.

A Ropewalk / Machine de cordier , shown is a 'grelin' being made.
From the Royal Collection that was  in TOULON ( Mediterranean ) Arsenal.
Built in the second part of the 18th it actually works.

A old traditional trawler  from TROUVILLE ( mid-way between CAEN and LE HAVRE now a tourists resort on la Baie de Seine near DEAUVILLE ) end of 19th century.
The cow hide (
'La peau de vache' ) that was put on the cod end to protect the netting from chafing on the sea bottom is easily seen. This is a benthic trawl (bottom).

An old hull showing its 'ribs'

An old 'machine à mâter' / masting machine or masting rig (?) .
Model from second part of 18th.

Famous 1850 America yacht ( concept was taken from a fishing boat on Newfoundland banks ).
Compare the way the shrouds are put in position with what is show in Investigations pages about le canot à misaine and the Azorean whale boat.

A sledge and other gear that the famous polar explorer Commandant CHARCOT used in
1920.
15 September  1936 "Pourquoi pas ?" sunk off Iceland coast.
A cyclonic tempest drove it on shoals .
All souls were lost save one, Master-timoneer GONIDEC who swam for it!
As usual The State let one driven individual fight alone for France's glory and ' attendit pour tirer les marrons du feu" / waited the right time to pull the chestnuts from the fire.

Relativily close-up on models.
See the rigging and the way the anchors are lashed on them.
Model of mooring ( badly focused alas) and of naval construction.

*   BRITTANY Boats and Harbours 2007 June  (Ploumanac'h )

Knots  in the Northern part of Brittany ( Ploumanach , which is a very interesting geological
singularity )

*   FRENCH  FLOATS : METAL AND GLASS

The glass floats   are from 2 very different regions.

--- one glass float which has been retired a long time ago is from around Le Golfe du
MORBIHAN (VANNES ) not far from LORIENT on the Southern Coast of Brittany

--- The others ( glass and metal) were still at works very recently (2005) and are from
LA ROCHELLE  on the Atlantic Coast

Coincidentally LORIENT and LA ROCHELLE were during  WW 2 two of the places
where were built  huge sub-marines bases providing for the German Navy wolf packs
plaguing the North Atlantic Convoys.

*   PARIS Boats and Harbours 2008 September  River Seine Quay under the
EIFFEL TOWER

Not salted water this time/ Photos shot while waiting for Nono and Alcosinus to arrive with their respective best-half to visit Le Musée Des Arts Premiers.

Those "péniches" or barges are luxury restaurants lurking there as spider in their web to trap tourists visiting the quite close Tour EIFFEL and  le Musée de la Marine au Trocadéro and Le Musée des Arts Premiers.
Get a look at the moorings there.
