not natural ones ) found on the beaches of  Douarnenez Bay and of mooring lines
in the commercial  fishermen's harbour of Douarnenez.

*   BRITTANY MOORING KNOT RECONSTRUCTED.

'Mooring ring' is a bronze Baoulé man bracelet from where I was born.
Rope is a piece of flotsam found on a beach in Baie de Douarnenez.

This is reconstructed  using a sketch . I had not my digital camera with me
at the time.

*   BRITTANY SEPTEMBER 2006 - SOUTH COAST
Lorient - Le Pouldu - Doelan - Concarneau

Toggled knots in Doelan.
This is the only place I have seen those till now.
Must be a local habit or one or two individuals with the same training ( family? work?...)

Tucked tails as a securing trick.

Casiers or pots in Le Pouldu. With some 'tucked' tail to make them secure, some
were found in Concarneau too those in the last four pictures.

Some knots not from the last rain.

Concarneau Musée de la Pêche- Duhamel Du Monceau  Traité Général des Pesches.

This is awfully 'heavy'.
Only for really interested persons.
112 photographies from bad to acceptable (no flash possible and time was short), this is documentation not art though the book would have been  worth 'art'.

I do hope, that Igkt members will have the luck to get a meeting  for the whole of Western Europe

set in Concarneau
. Just to get a chance to see this town and this Musée.
As easy if not easier to get there than to get to Douarnenez ( which has been my favorite haunt
for at least a third of a century!)
There is the famed KEROMAN submarine base built by the Germans in WWII with a surprisingly
modern installation for 'escaping from a submarine training' in Lorient not very far off, not to mention
that it was a very near thing that the "wolves packs" won the war for Germany and it cost many
lives to the Merchant Navy sailors who were absolutely heroics above the call of duty, I will not
speak about Naval types, after all it was their station in life, but Merchant seamen of all ranks
were really 'out of the ordinary'; La Pointe du Raz ( Continental Europe land's End ) and Le Phare
d'Eckmull ( Eckmull lighthouse).
People are quite pleasant in Concarneau and 'hostellerie' can be quite affordable either in 'chain hotels'
or "chez l'habitant' ( with the inhabitants in beds and breakfast and such)

PLEASE DO NOT USE ANY OF THESE PHOTOGRAPHIES IN ANY FORM OF
PUBLICATION.
If you need what they represent please contact Le Musée de la Pêche de Concarneau for 'official' pictures of much better quality and pay for them.

Old sailmaker sewing machine in Le musée de la pêche de Concarneau

Rope serving on wire rope on the trawler kept at Le Musée. You can visit it at your leisure.

IFREMER vessel.
A scientific sampling trawl  with neat knotting belonging to "Pourquoi pas ?"
( Why not ?  - Not Commandant Charcot's alas - fond memory to me as I did it as
ship model in my youth)  the IFREMER research ship - Institut Français de Recherche
pour l'Exploitation de la MER - (one of the two vessels jointly exploited, the other is manned by La Marine Nationale for the SHOM (Servive Hydrographique et Océanographique de la Marine)

Marine Nationale Française. Some knots and cordages

Noeud de de raban de cul de chalut Concarneau. This is the object of one topic in the
"Investigations" pages

Chaluts / Trawls.

Buoy chain and rope.

Miscellany of knots and boats - For ease in accessing the Picasa slideshow I have made them about 30 to 50 pictures worth.
