HOW TO MAKE A 6L _25B __6Lmobius _44Bmobius
 strip / ring / band

Here is the .ARI file for those who have realised that this ARIANE software replace quite a large lot of books ( and hence cost a lot less money ! )  and acquired a licensed coy of it and here is the GRID for those not having ARIANE

Here is the 'test' one I made using 4mm polyester cordage (always try for a rather 'stiff' cord)

HOW TO MAKE A MOBIUS / MÖBIUS / MOEBIUS STRIP / BAND from the
grid of a VIRTUAL REGULAR CYLINDRICAL KNOT or VIRTUAL SEMI-REGULAR CYLINDRICAL KNOT ( Virtual RCK or SRCK).

Schaake could not countenance the use of the VIRTUAL REGULAR CYLINDRICAL KNOT  procedure : in The Braider N° 16 he wrote
[open quote]

Although we can braid any Regular Mobius Knot by means of a virtual Regular Cylindrical Knot, a procedure which has theoretical advantages with respect to its path in the RMKT, it is from the practical point of view not a good method. The reason being threefold:

(1). The half twists in the Matthew Walker section makes the braiding process more cumbersome, because we have to pay careful attention that they do not accidentally disappear.

(2). The Matthew Walker coding of the crossings in the Matthew Walker section makes the braiding process, through the half-cycles affected, more cumbersome,

(3). At the end of the braiding process much slack will have to be taken out.

It will thus be obvious that, if possible, a much more practical braiding process should be used. A process which is direct rather than indirect through some virtual

***  The MOEBIUS / MÖBIUS / MOBIUS  BAND or STRIP does NOT have the
CORDAGE ROUTE OF A THK .

*** The MOBIUS BAND has ONLY ONE SURFACE while a REGULAR (1-STRAND) or SEMI-REGULAR (more than 1-STRAND) CYLINDRICAL KNOT. have an OUTside area and an INside area.

***  The MOEBIUS BAND has ONLY ONE EDGE while a  RCK or SRCK has TWO.

*** A THK whatever the parity of its number of LEAD is STRICTLY ROW AND COLUMN CODED so O1-U1 the 01-U1 coding through out for a MOBIUS depends on the parity of the number of LEAD

The first source to study is once again SCHAAKE and TURNER 's THE BRAIDER ( Vol
II Issue 16     1998  Nov )

Before going on reading you need to see my article published some years  ago ( before I met Schaake's work )  about my personal solution for the building of MOEBIUS BAND
of a better size than the ridiculously small one published by a person named BUDWORTH.

NOTATION FOR MOBIUS RING
L ( Lead)  and B ( Bight) are for the VIRTUAL RCK, for the Mobius their equivalent are
Lmobius  ==  Lm and  Bmobius  == Bm
Of course for the RCK nomenclature B is the number of BIGHT on EACH BIGHT RIM
(KNOT BORDER) for the RCK, so the total number of BIGHT existing in a RCK is (2*B)
while for the SINGLE BIGHT BOUNDARY( EDGE) of the Mobius the total number of
BIGHT is denoted Bmobius  == Bm

So the correspondence between the VIRTUAL RCK and the MOBIUS are

B =  ( Lm + Bm ) / 2 = Lm /2 + Bm /2
B - Bm /2 = Lm /2

L/2==  Lm /2 denote the Number of BIGHT ON ONE BIGHT RIM for what I call the
"transition zone", or the Matthew Walker part of the VIRTUAL RCK so the whole difference in BIGHT between the 2*B and the  is Bm equal to L/2 or to Lm /2

RIGUEUR DANS L'ECRITURE DE L'ETIQUETTE D'UN RUBAN DE MOBIUS

pour UN SEUL demi-tour 180°

on prend la forme

6Lm ou Lmobius     64Bm ou Bmobius        (   (35*2) - 6== 70-6==64

(x)L_(y)B_(x)Lm _ (2*y)-(x*z) Bm

si z = 3

9L_47B_9Lm_67Bm              (47*2)-(9*3)==94-27==67

SOME PECULIARITIES OF THE MOBIUS

--- A GAUCHO coding pattern is impossible in MOBIUS

--- the Row and Column coded pattern of the THK is possible ONLY if  L ( Lm ) is of EVEN parity ( ODD parity presents a break in the overall O1-U1 ). If ODD then the
regularity of O1-U1 breaks somewhere.

Just to show the point to the Thomases The Doubter
** Here is a picture of a Mobius I made years ago for my article
** Here is how ( to gain time ) I use printed knot : make sure you have an EXACT imitation of a real knot that is an OVER on one face correspond to and UNDER on the other face. BEWARE of image manipulation software such as Photoshop, Paint Net, Photofiltre : they do not really flip the image like you do when you turn a book leaf, it is ALWAYS THE SAME FACE that is showing  (IFF interested better study  Geometric Transformations )
** Here is what happen depending on the PARITY of the Number of LEAD

--- a HEAD-HUNTER coding pattern is possible if you have the proper number of LEAD.
see this one made by Michel SINCE

--- a HERRINGBONE coding pattern is possible
see this one made by Michel SINCE

--- some other coding pattern are possible but they MUST HAVE what SCHAAKE call EVERT-LATERAL EQUIVALENCY and that I personally see as a rotation symmetry.

A word about the way to express you grid and your knot :

suppose you use the cordage route of a RCK  12L 53B :
then calculation shows that you will "lose"  6B on EACH of the TWO EDGES of the
VIRTUAL RCK you will make the grid of so total loss is 12B .

So this 12L 53B grid will yield a 12L 94B  ( 12L ( (53*2)-12 ) MOEBIUS BAND so write
MOEBIUS-12L53B-12L94B

The part that makes the grid a grid of a VIRTUAL RCK is one that will collapse when
dressing and fairing the "in the cordage knot" and this part has the form of a
MATTHEW WALKER coding

See this MOEBIUS-12L53B-12L94B  grid

CRÊTE DE CROCodile  or CROCODILE RIDGE pattern cylindrical knot

Stefanos FANIDIS asked me if it was possible, using ARIANE, to make a grid to make a cylindrical Crocodile Ridge bracelet  instead of " in braid" strap.

( The difficulties were lying more in finding the proper coding than in having ARIANE trace it.
I perused GRANT's book and some  realisation on the Net my own site first
( DON_TUTS )

For trials prior to launching a full attack on a full size bracelet I built a cordage route with a  small number of BIGHT.

Claude HOCHET drew my cordage route using ARIANE and then, also using ARIANE, I added the pattern I believed was correct and another one I believed was interesting but  not the real crocodile ridge

another trail to explore  :   grid in JPG                        .ARI file
yet another trail to explore : grid in JPG                      .ARI file
A fourth trail to explore :  grid in JPG                         .ARI file

the ARIANE grid  for the pseudo-croc-ridge             .ARI file
the ARIANE grid for the a "should be" a croc ridge     ARI file
My 'trial knot" confirms that indeed this give a CROCODILE RIDGE even if in small round
cordage it is quite unimpressive to my eyes.

In fact both of the above revealed themselves to be crocodile ridge, simple the second shows less of  the knots involved
Two knots compared in cordage
Two knots with their respective grids

The five grids compared

The three first grids ( comparison here 'in the cordage" ) yield a crocodile ridge.
( Reidemeister's move are useful to understand what happen to the grids )

The five grids in a row as comparison.

Stefanos will be proofing the grids in flat cordage ( gutted paracord)

THANK YOU STEFANOS for pointing me in that direction

2012 Feb 20th  here is Stefanos proofing in gutted paracord of those grids, flat cordage suits
such knots better than round cordage

A word to the wise : avoid making them using a 'round cord' which does not suits them so well and use something that is akin to "flat lace' (or gutted paracord which will flatten).
All the knots coming from Schaake are much better in flat material IMO.

HOW TO MAKE ...a HERRINGBONE KNOT
(sub-title : a miscellany of herringbone-pineapple knots)
Well ! This question is frankly so ILL THOUGHT that it is UNANSWERABLE because its *real* meaning is UNDECIDABLE.
(download at the end of this entry)

As always 'logical planes' have to be strictly distinguished.

Is the question referring to
--- a NAME given to a knot for good or bad reasons,
--- to a knot TYPE,
--- to a knot CODE or PATTERN...
--- to....

Name given to a knot : then this has no real sense communication wise as this can go from some knot ASHLEY named "herringbone" to the Standard Herringbone Knot (SHK)  going though Standard Herringbone-Pineapple or SHPAK ( those are what is usually  called, by the less ignorant, a Pineapple but as Schaake remarked this is a bit too loose), even through Pineapple that are Herringbone-coded or patterned but are *not* SHPAK.

We will suppose (quite erroneously, I know!)  that most know what a true blood
Pineapple -SHPAK-   is IN ACTUAL STRUCTURAL FACTS.

Those SHPAK are assemblies, made in a particular way, of THK having ODD-number
of LEADs, each component THK being single-strand (or we change the group of
appurtenance of this so-called Pineapple)

Lets us see PINEAPPLE which are assemblies of  component THK with an
EVEN-number of LEADs  ( those are Pineapple BUT NOT "true blood" Pineapple,
the SHPAK.)

Examples taken from The Braider.
The most ham fisted and brain lazy readers will easily be able to make those knots
given here as *all* is given for that.

example one
3-PASS    5 BIGHT-NEST     B=15       Total L = 22
First SET of component THK =  two  8L 5B
Second SET of component THK = one 6L 5B

see EVEN number of LEADs and "2" L of difference between the two SET

example two
3-PASS    5 BIGHT-NEST    B=15        Total L = 24
First SET of component THK =  three  8L 5B
Second SET of component THK = EMPTY
Here *all* the component THK are identical in L & B dimension hence a single SET.

Just to show the difference :
 here is one which is
an assembly of TWO  PERFECT HERRINGBONE-PINEAPPLE (NOT a SHPAK
mind you it is)    (perfect=single-strand)
4-PASS    4 BIGHT-NEST  so B=16     Total L = 20   ( 11L from the first component
plus 9L from the second component)

Indeed 11L 4B and 9L 4B are here with a REGULAR NESTED BIGHTS cordage route and NOT A THK cordage route.

Another assembly of TWO PERFECT HERRINGBONE PINEAPPLE

and

here a COMPOUND BROKEN HERRINGBONE-PINEAPPLE.
Just build the code ! (easy as pie if you are a REAL knottyer REALLY knowing the
HERRINGBONE CODING ! )  you have all that is need for that

REMEMBER : DO NOT CONFUSE THE PATTERN : here HERRINGBONE
withthe REAL IDENTITY OF THE KNOT.

If you want to see something  "absurdly called a herringbone" by Ashley ( it is not even Herringbone patterned !!!) look at ABoK#1589

(see here  if you cannot tell the difference in the firs nano second of seeing it !
or here considering the head and tail stand for the BIGHTs-RIMs or the
KNOT-EDGEs.
If the "arrows" of the fishbone do not progress from tail to head but rather from belly
to back or back to belly then it is NOT a Herringbone pattern but something looking
like the so-called Gaucho pattern)

For the really slow with "de la buée sur les vitres" (vapour mist on the window panes)
still not getting the point :
GAUCHO is a COLUMN-coding
HERRINGBONE is a ROW-coding  ( frame of reference : horizontal mandrel).
See the difference now!

ABoK#1381 is also called Herringbone while not corresponding to the proper
nomenclature slot ( it is more the Gaucho PATTERN)
ABoK#1386 is almost a herringbone PATTERN, just like ABoK1390 has a
somewhat Herringbone PATTERN

Now for the more "brain alive" here are some way to find your way among
HERRINGBONE-PINEAPPLE KNOTS

The TEN sub-families of Herringbone-Pineapple

Characteristics of SHPAK  STANDARD  herringbone-pineapple

Characteristics of PERFECT  herringbone-pineapple
